Compensation for Office Accidents

Your employer has a legal duty to look after your safety and well-being and minimise the possibility of accidents at work by adhering to health and safety regulations and guidelines. We tend to think of building and construction sites as a typical environment where serious accidents are more likely to happen but accidents in the office can result in severe consequences that lead to long-term injury or illness.

If you have suffered an injury or illness through working in an office environment, and you believe it was caused by someone else or by negligence on the part of your employer, you can make a claim for personal injury insurance. To speak to one of our professional consultants call us on 0800 327 7919 or fill in our online form

Common accidents in the office

  • Slipping or tripping These types of accidents may be caused by uneven flooring or by the fact that a pathway has been littered with objects causing a tripping hazard. Also there may have been a spillage of liquid resulting in the floor becoming a slipping hazard.
  • Faulty Equipment  An accident may be caused by faulty equipment (printers, computers, fax machines etc.), or a faulty electricity supply. There may be a problem with inanimate objects such as a chair which could have severe consequences. A crush accident may result if the employee gets caught in a machine or between a machine and another object. It is the responsibility of your employer to ensure all equipment is monitored and is at acceptable safety standards at all times.
  • Falls from height These types of accident are traditionally linked with construction and building sites but they are prevalent in office environments when, for instance, an employee uses faulty equipment to reach objects at height.
  • Lifting injuries  Also termed manual handling injuries, these often occur when an employee has not been trained sufficiently in how to lift heavy objects as part of his/her job role. It is the responsibility of the employer to ensure appropriate training takes place.

Making a claim

If the incident occurred within the last three years you can make a claim for compensation. Clearly the more evidence you have about the claim the more likely you will win your case. So where possible obtain the following information:

  • Ensure the accident is reported and recorded in the accident book.
  • If possible take a photograph of the scene of the incident
  •  Get the names of any witnesses.
  • Keep receipts and documents which evidence everything you might reasonably feel you have incurred as a result of the accident. This may include medication, travel expenses, records of loss of earnings etc.
